James Douglas who developed the Copper Queen and later became the CEO of Phelps Dodge, Charles Briggs who led the investors that purchased the Irish Mag and formed the Calumet and Arizona Mining Company, and Lemuel Shattuck who developed the Shattuck and Denn Mines, the origin of the Shattuck-Denn Mining Company. Several giants of the mining industry had deep roots in Bisbee including Dr. This is the home of the famous Copper Queen, Irish Mag, Superior and Pittsburgh, Calumet and Arizona, and Shattuck-Arizona, some of the early copper mines (Ransome, 1904). At 6000 feet, after passing through a tunnel, the road drops down into a narrow canyon above Bisbee’s Victorian brick business blocks and modest miners’ houses. Leaving Tombstone, Highway 80 heads south through limestone hills and across a creosote bush-covered flat before making the ascent to Mule Mountain Pass. The remains of many of the famous mines can be seen outside of town. Fly Photography Studio, Epitaph Newspaper, and the Crystal Palace Saloon. There was plenty more to see downtown including the site of the gunfight at the OK Corral, Bird Cage Theater, C. Registration and tours were available at the Tombstone Courthouse State Historic Park. The mines in the Tombstone mining district (Butler, 1938) are said to have produced over 32 million ounces of silver. The population peaked at 10,000 in the mid-1880s. One of the last big silver rushes followed Ed Sheiffelin’s discovery in 1877. The “town too tough to die” was alive and well. Those traveling to Bisbee before the evening Welcoming Reception were able to visit the historic silver camp of Tombstone, Arizona while in route. © 2020 American Society of Civil Engineers. The 1998 MHA Conference was held June 4-7, at the Copper Queen Plaza Convention Center and the Presbyterian Church Annex in Bisbee, Arizona.Find a library where document is available. In this paper, a design example is presented to illustrate how to apply two hydrologic methods, including the rational method used to size the sewer pipes and sump pumps and the EPA Storm Water Management Model 5 was adopted to verify the performance of the proposed system under minor and major storm events, respectively. To design such a drainage system for multiple storm events, all individual drainage elements are to be sized individually, and then the entire drainage system must be evaluated under the tailwater effects. Although the pump system in practice may be a permanent station or a mobile unit, the pump system prepared for a highway underpass must be documented in the emergency operational instructions. It is recommended that the underpass drainage facility be composed of two systems: an underground sewer line be sized to collect the minor storm event through gravity and a pump system be prepared to lift the excess water during a major storm event. In accordance with the green concept of Low-Impact Development, in which a drainage system is designed to pass the full spectrum of runoff flows, this paper presents a new algorithm to improve the highway underpass drainage design for both safety and hydraulic efficiency. An increasing concern is how to quickly and safely remove the stormwater from low points of urban area roadways. Hybrid Drainage Design for Highway Underpassĭrowning fatalities in traffic accidents often occur at roadway sag curves or depressed sections.
